The role of public health is to improve the health of local residents, prevent risks to wider scale public health and reduce health inequalities to help people live longer, healthier lives.
Healthier Wigan works with public health teams to support individuals to prevent poor health the work in the borough of support services such as Inspiring Healthy Lifestyles, Healthy Routes and Addaction are central to giving our local people practical help for the long term and to address some of the challenges faced by keeping in good health and make real changes for the long term for their lives.
These services along with initiatives such as; Heart of Wigan promoting physical activity through the utilisation of green spaces and active travel, ‘Health Movement for Change’ – all about involvement – ensuring individuals and organisations in our communities all support each other. Made up of members of the community, frontline staff, and volunteers from across the public voluntary and private sectors, it includes Health Champions, Heart Champions, Cancer Champions, Dementia Friends, and Young Health Champions, all working together to improve the health of Wigan residents.

Healthy Routes – provide free, friendly, confidential and practical personal support and motivation tailored to your specific needs and lifestyle to improve your health and wellbeing.
Inspiring Healthy Lifestyles – offer a range of Physical activity and weight management services from a variety of locations and leisure centres across the borough
Addaction – community substance misuse service for adults and young people aged 10 to 24 years.
